"UFC is renewing its push to legalize mixed martial arts in New York.
"Lorenzo Fertitta, chairman and CEO of UFC, is in Albany today to discuss MMA legalization with state legislators and advocate for the bill's passage.
"During an interview with Talk 1300 radio host Paul Vandenburgh, Fertitta said that they feel they're 'closer than ever' to legalizing MMA in New York.
"'New York is the only state left in the union that doesn't allow (professional) mixed martial arts,' Fertitta said.
"Fertitta reiterated that legalizing MMA in New York would have a significant economic impact. A report released in late 2013 found that allowing MMA bouts in New York would generate $135 million in economic activity each year.
"If New York legalizes MMA, Fertitta said they will hold events in Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse and other upstate cities. There's also the added benefit of being able to hold major events in New York City at venues like Madison Square Garden."
