The Next Level Transition

Transitioning to the Next Level
By: Dan Downes, MMA Draft

"There aren’t too many secrets left in MMA. We all know that fighters have to be well rounded, and the new breed of competitor trains in all different aspects. Sometimes, though, that’s not enough. In this week’s Draft Board we’ll discuss how to approach training in the new era.

"The level of competition has advanced to the point where each full time competitor has learned the basics. There may be some exceptions, but most fighters of today have learned the essentials in wrestling, boxing and jiu jitsu. They can tell you how to do a single leg, throw a body hook and finish a rear naked choke. There aren’t too many “secret” techniques anymore. Back at UFC 4 when Royce Gracie defeated Dan Severn, the announcers had never seen a triangle choke before. They didn’t even know what to call the move. Sure new techniques will come along in the future, but the information gap has decreased dramatically."
