Always known for his blazing fists, Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort showed off some pretty devastating feet in the UFC on FX 7 main event at Ibirapuera Arena in Sao Paulo, Brazil Saturday night, as he knocked out Michael Bisping in the second round, scrapping the Brit’s plans for a shot at middleweight champion Anderson Silva in the process.
“Congratulations to Vitor, I’ve got no excuses,” said Bisping. “I had an amazing training camp, I felt fantastic, I felt very confident that I was going to win this fight. It was a beautiful kick, he caught me, he was the better man than me tonight. You win some, you lose some. I am not going away.”
As for Belfort, who was coming off a September 2012 loss to Jon Jones in a 205-pound title fight, his sights are firmly set on a rematch with “Bones.”
"Take that punk Chael Sonnen away,” said Belfort of the man challenging Jones for the light heavyweight title in April. “Dana (White), Lorenzo (Fertitta), take him out. Let me fight Jon Jones. I need that rematch. Take that clown out. Let me fight the real champion.”
Bisping stalked behind a high guard to open, staying right in Belfort’s punching range. Both fired off kicks, Bisping downstairs, Belfort up top, with the Brit being the only one to land. Midway through the round, Belfort began to get his rhythm a bit and he started to let his strikes go. Bisping’s defense was solid though and he worked a nice in and out strategy with his standup attack, not waiting for Belfort to plant his feet and let a bomb go. Late in the round though, it wasn’t Belfort’s fists, but his feet that did damage, as he rocked “The Count” with a kick to the head just before the bell.
Belfort’s confidence was high in round two, as he stood in front of Bisping with his hands nearly at his waist. Bleeding from the nose, Bisping continued to pepper his foe, presumably scoring points, but not doing damage. The points would not be an issue though, as another left high kick landed flush, and this one marked the beginning of the end. Bisping fell to the mat hard, and while he tried to cover up, Belfort’s follow-up shots left referee Dan Miragliotta no choice but to step in and stop the fight at 1:27 of the second frame.
With the win, Belfort improves to 22-10; Bisping falls to 24-5.
