Fight Night Liverpool: Thompson vs Till main card

Action starts at 1 pm ET

Main event: Stephen Thompson vs Darren Till
Thirsty for some good news following the devastating loss of their football club the night before, the Liverpool fans backed their hometown hero from the first second of his walkout and every second of his duration in the Octagon with an enthusiasm usually reserved for the Conor McGregors of the world. Even with a first round that didn’t warrant much cheering for either side, the Echo Arena was nothing short of deafening. Wonderboy’s range and leg kicks were clearly an issue for Till, but he began to find his rhythm in the second. An eye poke to Till briefly halted the chess match in the third, only to give Till a flurry of momentum, landing a number of punches. The fight reached its climax late in the fifth as Till’s punches finally knocked Wonderboy to the ground, only to have Thompson get back to his feet and return fire. Statistically control favored Till, while Thompson compiled more strikes, and the frenetic crowd held its breath as the scorecards were read. Official Result: @darrentill2 (48-47, 49-46, 49-46) def @wonderboymma by Unanimous Decision

Co-main: Neil Magny vs Craig White
Stepping in on short notice to make his Octagon debut in place of the injured Gunnar Nelson, Cage Warriors veteran Craig White gave a game effort against the number nine-ranked Magny. But when Magny scored a takedown late in the first, he capitalized on White’s defenseless position against the cage and unleashed a flurry of ground and pound that spoiled White’s UFC debut. With the win, Magny now has the third most UFC wins at welterweight with 14. Official Result: @neilmagny def @theTHNDRcat by TKO, first round, 4:32.

Arnold Allen vs Mads Burnell
A largely even, back and forth affair saw the forward marching Burnell damage Allen with some overhand jabbing, while Allen displayed some deft counter-striking that made Burnell pay for his close range. When the fight went to the mat, however, it was Burnell who was largely in charge and keeping Allen on defense and visibly gassing him. Seemingly headed for a decision loss in the third, Allen was able to slip gurard and change position on Burnell and sink the choke to the surprise of all watching. Official Result: @arnoldbfa def @burnellmma by submission, front choke, third round, 2:41

Arnold Allen : “Well, I was fighting like a bit of an idiot but, lesson learned. It was a tough, gritty fight and Mads and I both gave it everything we had. I’m very happy to get the win. I actually used the same maneuver to win my UFC debut. I kept putting my hand through and around his neck and he wasn’t doing anything to free himself or shake my arm off so I found an opportunity to make him pay. I was supposed to fight Enrique Barzola back in January but the fight fell through so I’ve been in training camp all throughout the year so I’m going to take a few weeks off and then get back in there. I would definitely fight Enrique if the opportunity came up but I’m also 4-0 in the UFC now and would love to step up the competition in my next one.”

Jason Knight vs Makwan Amirkhani
In a thrilling culmination of their weeks-long extracurricular beefing, Makwan Amirkhani and Jason Knight took turns inflicting damage and taunts. Mr. Finland busted up Knight with some slick counter striking that bloodied his face, and Knight dropped Amirkhani twice in the first round with some well-timed punches. Amirkhani smiled and stuck his tongue out most of the fight in response to Knight’s ongoing verbal assault. When the fight found itself on the mat for most of the third round, it was Amirkhani that dominated the control time enough to pull ahead and score the decision victory and then call out Cub Swanson. @MakwanAmirkhani (29-28, 29-28) def @jasonthekid23 (30-27) by Split Decision.

Makwan Amirkhani : “I took quite a long break but it feels amazing to be back. I loved the fight, the crowd loved the fight and Jason Knight said that he loved it too. He said that I earned his respect tonight and he also earned mine. The first round was fast and a lot of action and then, in rounds 2 and 3, I took over and controlled the pace. What happened is, I started having fun again. I knew that I had to make the most of my opportunities when I returned and I did that tonight. Now, I want to fight Cub Swanson and prove that I am one of the best in this division.”

Claudio Silva vs Nordine Taleb
In his first fight in nearly four years, Brazilian Caludio Silva absorbed some heavy blows from Taleb early on, but was able to turn a faulty leg kick from Taleb into some vicious ground and pound that went right into the mount. From there Silva easily locked the RNC and held on until Taleb tapped. Official Result: Claudio Silva def @TNT83MMA by submission, rear naked choke, first round, 4:31.

Claudio Silva : “I feel incredible right now. This fight has been 4 years in the making. I was supposed to fight Taleb 4 years ago but I had a lot of health problems and it’s amazing to finally complete my mission of having this fight. He is a very respected, very tough opponent. I’ve gone through a lot to get here – injuries that many thought I would never overcome. My family asked me to never fight again, but here I am today! I am Brazilian and I love my country but I also live in London so this moment is extra special to me. I call myself a British-zilian because this is my second home and some of the happiest moments of my life, like tonight, happened here. My goal is to continue to grow… as a fighter, as a person, everything. Whatever the UFC wants from me, I will do it. Anyone they want me to fight, I will be there. This is my passion. And one last thing, please tell Dana White that I want my $50K!”

Eric Spicely vs Darren Stewart
Both fighters were able to land some heavy overhand jabs that rocked the other, but in this largely standup battle it was Stewart doing the greatest damage, dropping spicely in the second and swarming him with some brutal ground and pound until the referee jumped between them. Emotional win for The Dentist. Official Result: @Darren_mma def @EricSpicely by TKO, second round, 1:47.

Darren Stewart : “This means everything to me. The guys that have beaten me were just better than me on that night and I knew this moment would come. To get my first UFC win, especially being here in England, nothing could be a better feeling. From here, I’ll just carry on fighting… Whoever they give me, I’m ready to take them on.”

Fight Night Liverpool: Thompson vs Till FS1 prelims

Action starts at 11 am ET

Daniel Kelly vs Tom Breese
From the jump, it was the 26 year-old Breese who looked speedy and crisp in this standup striking battle, reminding the crowd of why he was once lauded for his potential. He consistently found his target enough times to drop the veteran Kelly in the first and walk out with finish. Official Result: Tom Breese defeats @DanKellyJudo by TKO, first round, 3:33.

Tom Breese : “Tonight was special for me and, to be honest, I did envision it being a quick night. I wanted to get the knockout and I visualized it this entire camp so it feels amazing to follow through with that. I don’t think about who the next opponents area, just about my own self improvement. That is what this sport is to me – it’s about me and what I do, not who is matched up with me. I’ve faced setbacks along the way but hearing that crowd roar meant a lot. It was a fast fight so my plan is to be back out there again very soon.”

Lina Lansberg vs Gina Mazany
Lansberg’s grappling was effective in stifling Mazany’s offense for much of the fight, the majority of which took place in the clinch. While not much damage was inflicted, the advantage in strikes in the superior defense were plenty for Lansberg to cruise to victory. Official Result: @LinaLansberg (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) def @GinaDangerAK by Unanimous Decision

Lina Lansberg : “I felt great coming into the fight and I am very happy to have the win. I was very well prepared but, as the fight was starting, I thought my punches felt a bit heavier, slower, but the kicks were perfect so I used those to control the fight. I thought Gina’s clinch game was very strong but I have been fighting in the Thai style for so long that this is my world and I will control it. I am now #14 in the division and I want to keep climbing. I will fight anyone that comes but, if I had my choice, Bethe Correia would be a fight I am interested in and I would love to do it somewhere in the North: Sweden, Denmark, something like that would be incredible.”

Brad Scott vs Carlo Pedersoli
While UFC newcomer Pedersoli benefitted from an unorthodox, kick-heavy attack, his opponent Scott did most of his best work in this action-filled fight with classic clean striking, including a brutal straight left in the first that dropped Pedersoli to the canvas in the first round and nearly ended his night there. Some taunting and finger-wagging from both men punctuated the bout, each trying to insist they weren’t feeling their opponent’s barrage. As the fight wore on, Pedersoli’s hard kicks began to outpace Scott’s straight boxing, and the extra strikes combined with an advantage in fight control send Pedersoli home with the decision win. Official Result: @CPedersoliJr (29-28, 29-28) def @BradleyScott89 (29-28) by split decision. THEY SAID IT:
Carlo Pederoli : “I am happy to take the win but I do not agree that it was a split decision. You have to give the judges respect and I do not know what they saw but I do not believe it was split. However, I took this fight on one week notice. I only had my last fight one month ago so I was on holiday and not training but, when the UFC called me, I said yes immediately and now I have my first UFC win. I am brand new so I don’t know who will be next but I will talk to the UFC and see who they think I should fight. I am ready for anyone.”

Gillian Robertson vs Molly McCann
Gillian Robertson had predicted her grappling prowess would lead to a first round finish of the Liverpool hero. McCann survived some brutal ground work in the first, but couldn’t outlast her in the second as The Savage locked in a rear naked choke that put McCann to sleep. Official Result: @savage_ufc def @MeatballMolly by Submission, rear naked choke, second round, 2:05.

Gillian Robertson: “This is exactly how I saw the fight playing out – a classic striker vs. grappler match. Once we made it to the ground, I felt confident there and worked to get the finish. I didn’t feel much pressure, honestly. In fact, I’d say fighting in her hometown took the edge off. I knew from the get-go that the crowd was going to support her and that she had all the pressure of winning for her hometown fans. I just had to go do my job. I felt the referee stoppage was a little late. I felt when she was finished and then had to wait on the referee to stop the fight. I knew she wasn’t going to tap because she’s a warrior but I also knew I couldn’t let go of the submission until the referee called it. I just want to keep fighting frequently. To me, it doesn’t matter who or where, this is my life – I just want to keep fighting.”

Elias Theodorou vs Trevor Smith
Very first fight of the card and Echo Arena was already roaring, and were treated to a proper scrap between Elisa Throdorou and Trevor Smith. Doing much of their respective damage in the clinch, the bout was heavy with underhooks and knees against the fence. Some wild elbows that rocked Theodorou and opened a cut on his head briefly halted the action in the second as doctors checked it out, but it was the only lull in the action of a high-energy fight that went to the final bell. An edge in total strikes was enough for The Spartan to grab the UD. Official Result: @EliasTheodorou def @trevorsmithmma, Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Elias Theodorou: : “My goal in this fight was to be the aggressor and get the better of the exchanges. [Smith] was a Division I wrestler and has been wrestling since before I was an adult so I knew I had to keep the fight going where I wanted it and take advantage of the situations when it was. I am the #15 ranked guy and I want to build on that. I’ve always fancied myself as a bit of a poor man’s Machida and I’d love to fight the real one next!”
