Biografia

TRAINING: Wake up early for some cardio, later on it’s the good live stuff (sparring, cage work and grappling). In the evening, some strategy and smart stuff or a mitt session.

When and why did you start training for fighting? In 1996, I was 26 years old when I first stepped in ENTRAM GYM at my hometown Tijuana, Mexico.

What ranks and titles have you held? Noche de Gladiadores – Lightweight Champ, Currently ranked one of the top MMA fighters in Mexico.

Do you have any heroes? My Mother Lupita Briones. Ever since I remember she managed to give us all of our needs and much more by herself.

What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? IT MEANS EVERYTHING. It’s a dream come true, it means a new beginning of my career that gives me a lot of motivation to make a name for myself in world-class MMA for my hometown, TIJUANA. I’m making the UFC my new office and stepping for the first time into that Octagon is like my first day at this great dream place.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? I studied for a degree in Computer Science Engineering in college for about 3 1/2 years, but suddenly my life went in a different direction and I had to start law school. That’s my major.

What was your job before you started fighting? I was working at a law firm on weekdays and as a bartender/waiter on weekends.

Favorite grappling technique: Arm in Guillotine, brabo and crucifix choke

Favorite striking technique: Body shots, overhands and uppercuts
  • Team Velasquez on TUF LATAM

  • Pro since 2007

  • 10 wins by KO, six by submission (arm triangle, 2 RNC, 2 triangle, armbar)

  • 11 first round finishes

  • Has 7-3-1 record in his last eleven bouts

  • Has lost bouts to UFC vets Bobby Green, Alex Soto, and Mike de la Torre

  • Origin of nickname – “People started calling me that in hockey leagues, because I supposedly had similarities to Russian hockey player Pavel Bure. The nickname stuck outside the hockey world as well, in high school and college. And when I started fighting I had the nickname already, so I decided to keep it to honor all my hockey people and the sport I dedicated my life to and that gave me so much for about 14 years of my life.”
