UFC 14, 15More Information
Mark Kerr’s professional career in No-Holds-Barred competition can be characterized as remarkable. Kerr is touted by many to be the most dangerous man in the world. His explosive career began in 1997 in the World Vale Tudo Championships in Sao Paolo, Brazil as he entered the tournament as a virtual unknown. He took the Brazilians by storm and defeated Fabio Gurgel in a bloody, thirty minute final bout that gained Kerr the respect and admiration of fighting fans everywhere, as well as the title of 1997 World Vale Tudo Champion. His strength, endurance and extraordinary grappling technique proved superior to Gurgel’s BJJ fight style as Kerr pummeled his opponent and won by judges' decision.Word of Kerr’s performance in Brazil quickly spread within the NHB industry and caught the attention of UFC promoters. Kerr was asked to enter the XIV Ultimate Fighting Championships in July 1997 where he was the winner of the Heavyweight Division Four-Man Tournament. A referee stoppage was necessary against Moti Horenstein in only 2 minutes and 23 seconds as Horenstein had no option but to cover up and try to do damage control as Kerr peppered him with unrelenting blows. Kerr’s next opponent was Dan Bobish who had to surrender by tap-out after only 1 minute and 38 seconds. Kerr’s return to the XV UFC Octagon in October of 1997 was even more impressive as he KO’d Greg Stott in a mere 19 seconds. He then defeated Duane Cason by referee stop to again win the Heavyweight Four-Man Tournament.
