He received his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Alosio Silva in 1999.Since his UFC debut in September 2000, Café has been fighting mostly in jiu-jitsu tournaments. He was the runner up in the 2001 World BJJ Championships and he won every tournament he entered in 2002. In Brazil, when you start in the academy all the easy guys, the guys everybody beats easy, they call “Milky Coffee”. When you start beating everyone else they then call you “Coffee”. That's how he got his nickname because he started beating everyone.
